Oticon Real: a Lafayette audiologist review

The short version

Oticon Real is currently one of our top three flagship recommendations at ACI Hearing Center, alongside Phonak Audeo Sphere and Widex Moment Sheer. For patients who spend a lot of time in restaurants, family gatherings, or open workspaces (which is most of our Lafayette practice), Real is often the best of that group.

Where Real wins in our fittings:

Where Real is not the best pick:

There is no single best hearing aid. There is the best hearing aid for you. That decision comes out of the fitting appointment and the 60-day trial, not a spec sheet comparison.

Under the hood

Oticon Real launched February 2023 on the Sirius chip, a 5-nanometer processor that runs Oticon's MoreSound Intelligence engine and Deep Neural Network. The DNN was trained on 12 million real-world sound scenes, so the device makes decisions based on learned patterns rather than fixed rules.

The practical result: instead of applying one noise-reduction setting to every situation, Real recognizes what type of environment you are in (busy restaurant, church service, one-on-one conversation, driving), and adjusts multiple parameters at once to preserve speech clarity without stripping the room of ambient sound.

This matters because human hearing does not want silence. Human hearing wants context. Real gives you the room, and then makes the speech in the room accessible on top of that. Older platforms (including Oticon More) leaned harder on noise removal, which sometimes left patients feeling like they were listening through a tunnel.

Form factors and specs

Technology tiers

Oticon Real comes in five levels: 990, 970, 950, 920, and 910. All five use the same Sirius chip and same physical form factors. The tier controls how many directional processing channels, how much environmental analysis, and how much noise-reduction customization you get.

At ACI Hearing Center we do not push everyone toward the top tier. We fit Level 990 to patients with complex listening lives (frequent restaurants, meetings, family gatherings, driving between listening environments). We fit Level 950 to patients with more predictable listening environments where the incremental benefit of 990 does not justify the price difference. If your day is quiet and structured, you may not need Level 990.

Cost at ACI Hearing Center

Complete Oticon Real treatment plans at ACI Hearing Center range from $4,500 (Essential technology level) to $7,500 (Premium technology level) per pair. The Premium tier includes Level 990 with the full MoreSound Intelligence feature set. The Essential tier is a well-fitted Level 910 or 920 configuration that still delivers real clinical benefit for patients with more predictable listening environments.

Every treatment plan at ACI includes:

Financing is available through CareCredit and PowerPay. Payment plans typically run 12 to 60 months. See our financing options for details.

The 60-day trial

Every Oticon Real fitting at ACI Hearing Center comes with a 60-day trial. Here is what that actually looks like:

  1. Fitting day. We program Real based on your audiogram, verify the fit with real-ear measurements (we do not skip this step), and send you home with the devices.
  2. Week 1 follow-up. Come in or use the Oticon Companion app for a remote adjustment. Most patients need one program tweak based on real-world use.
  3. Week 3 follow-up. Fine-tune based on 3 weeks of daily use. Any listening situation that is not working, we address here.
  4. Week 6 follow-up. Final fine-tune. This is when we check if Real is the right long-term device for you.
  5. Day 60 decision. Keep, return, or exchange for a different platform.

Approximately 90 percent of our Oticon Real trials convert to a keep decision. The ones that do not typically get exchanged for Phonak Audeo Sphere (for cognitively-loaded listening) or a power BTE (for profound loss).
