What Original Medicare covers

Original Medicare (Part A hospital, Part B outpatient) covers a diagnostic hearing test when your primary care doctor writes a referral. That is it. It does not cover:

• Hearing aids themselves
• The audiologist visits to select, fit, and adjust hearing aids
• Hearing aid batteries, chargers, or repairs
• Tinnitus retraining therapy or masking devices

This is not new. It has been the rule since Medicare began in 1965. Congressional legislation to add a hearing aid benefit to Original Medicare has been introduced repeatedly and has not passed. Do not wait for it. If you have hearing loss now, you need to look at Medicare Advantage or private financing.

How Medicare Advantage plans handle hearing aids

Medicare Advantage plans in Louisiana handle hearing aid benefits in one of three ways. Which one applies to you depends on your specific plan and tier.

Model 1: Flat dollar allowance

The plan gives you a dollar amount per ear per 3 years. Common ranges in Louisiana plans: $500 to $3,000 per ear. You pick any hearing aid at any provider, and the plan reimburses up to that amount. You pay the rest out of pocket.

Example: Your plan gives you $2,000 per ear per 3 years. You choose a mid-level pair at $5,500. The plan pays $4,000. You pay $1,500 out of pocket.

Model 2: TruHearing or HearUSA network

The plan routes you to a third-party hearing aid network (usually TruHearing, sometimes HearUSA). The network sells devices at 3 tiers: Basic, Advanced, Premium. Each tier has a fixed price, and your plan covers a set portion.

What to know: Network devices are made by the major manufacturers but are usually 1 to 2 generations behind the premium tier. A "Premium" network device is often equivalent to the mid-level device at a full-service audiologist.

Model 3: No benefit

Some Medicare Advantage plans have no hearing aid benefit at all. Check your Evidence of Coverage document under "Hearing aids" or "Hearing services." If there is no section, there is no benefit.

How to use your Medicare Advantage hearing aid benefit at ACI

Once you know which of the three models your plan uses, the path to using the benefit follows the same six steps. Here is what happens from the moment you check your card to the moment you walk out with your treatment plan priced.

1. Confirm you have Medicare Advantage (not Original Medicare). Look for a carrier name on your card.
2. Look up your hearing aid benefit in the Evidence of Coverage document or by calling the member services number on your card.
3. Call ACI at 337-223-9448 with your plan name and member ID ready. We verify your specific benefit for free.
4. Schedule your diagnostic hearing evaluation.
5. Review the treatment plan with your plan benefit applied and your final out of pocket cost.
6. ACI handles the reimbursement paperwork with your carrier.

Louisiana Medicare Advantage carriers that commonly include hearing aid coverage

These carriers sell Medicare Advantage plans in Lafayette Parish and across Louisiana. Most (not all) of their plans include some hearing aid benefit. Confirm your specific plan tier before enrolling.

• Humana: flat allowance or TruHearing depending on plan
• Aetna: flat allowance or NationsHearing network
• WellCare: TruHearing network on most plans
• Peoples Health: flat allowance on most plans (Louisiana-based, wide Acadiana presence)
• UnitedHealthcare: HearUSA network, tiered pricing
• BCBS Louisiana Medicare Advantage: flat allowance on most plans

Open Enrollment: October 15 through December 7, 2026

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7 every year. During that window you can:

• Switch Medicare Advantage plans
• Switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage
• Switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare
• Add or drop Part D prescription coverage

Changes made during Open Enrollment take effect January 1, 2027.
